A glimpse into my world as a visual artist.

My life as a visual artist began way before I started playing an instrument. I’ve been drawing and painting since I was 18 months old and thought I was going into a career as a visual artist even throughout high school. I guess you can say I’m self taught from the endless hours of sitting with pen, paper, paints and canvases. Just like practicing my instruments for hours on end, I can sit and paint and completely lose track of time. The very first art instruction I ever had was at age 16 when I started painting nude figures. Nudes immediately became my favorite subject. The past 18 years of living in Los Angeles I’ve consistently gone to open studio life drawing classes and have amassed close to 1000 figure paintings and drawings, while evolving my style and preferred mediums.

Inks are my absolute favorite for painting figures. I use Japanese sumi brushes dipped in ink and ink washes to block out large shadows and allow the negative space to create the rest of the figure. If I’m creating outlines I love the organic feel of bamboo pens. Theres nothing like having to dip a pen in ink and control the flow on the paper. Colored inks have crept into my work recently and I love how vibrant the colors are, way more than a wash of watercolor.
