Grunge & Graphic Tees

Channeling my inner Courtney Love

Skip-n-whistle-grunge (16)

I have been seriously waiting for grunge to come back in style for a while. The flannels, Doc Martin’s, baby doll dresses…I love them all. This era of style brings me back to my middle school years when I was just figuring out the music I liked, the clothes I wanted to wear and the pop icons I worshipped. Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins was plastered all over my locker during these years, and my wardrobe was on rotation of flannels, over sized sweaters, band t-shirts and anything with an emipre waist. I wasn’t allowed to own Doc Martens (my mom thought they were too heavy and would throw out my back) so I settled for my Chuck Taylors and low-top Doc spin-offs made my Easton. I was so obsessed with these shoes, I still remember the smell of the leather and thick rubber sole from when I was thirteen. Fast forward to 18 years later and the updated grunge look rocks even harder, especially with an awesome collection of graphic tees by Skip N’ Whistle!

Skip N Whistle has an fantastic selection of designs all printed on those super soft and cozy American Apparel tees. I love the loose-fitting sweatshirt look made from t-shirt material. It’s the perfect weight for fall weather here in LA. And who can resist an image of a little Boston Terrier wearing some hip frames? I’m a Boxer owner and dog lover so this obviously caught my eye. Don’t worry all you crazy cat lovers…there’s plenty of Skip N Whistle cat shirts for you too!

Did you ever have that moment when you walked into the grocery store for the first time in college WITHOUT your parents and went ape shit and bought every sugar-coated, marshmallow-infused, cocoa-covered cereal you could get your hands on? Well, I definitely did that and I also had a very similar moment when I bought these Docs. I picked up this worn-in vintage pair at the Melrose Flea Market about 4 years ago and had one of those proud, grown up moments of “I can buy whatever the hell I want,” since previously in my teens these were completely off limits. Now my mom is a full supporter (and supplier) of my inherited love for shoes:)

Girl!! You ALWAYS have the coolest photoshoots!! I loved my doc martins and actually STILL have them in my closet. Of course they’ll never get worn here in Hawaii but I couldn’t part with them.

Love this look! I’m a fan of grunge and I’m glad it’s back. I regret getting rid of my 8-hole Docs from college (maybe you bought them!). Looks great with the shorts and of course, flannel!
